Was Ounce Of Weed Motivation For Mob Attack?

Ricky Green

advertisement

Ricky Green has a lot that he could be mad about. You'd be pissed off, too, if you were jumped in the dark by six skateboard-wielding thugs, stabbed with a knife, knocked unconscious and left for dead on an otherwise quiet street just yards from Brighton Beach.

Amazingly, instead of being angry, Green says that he is grateful for all that has happened - that the violent incident has served to awaken those in the Bolinas community that were unaware or chose not to acknowledge a violent element growing in some of the town youth, who hijacked the name of the otherwise fictional Bolinas Border Patrol (BBP) as a moniker for their not-so-fictional vigilante activities.

Green spoke with Bolinas2miles.com for his first interview, which included details of the attack (the attackers showed up with cars and blinding headlights), what he is doing to heal, that being a "street person" is a life that he chose, and what he thinks should happen to the people responsible for the violence. What lead up to the attack, he suspects, were run-ins with others in town that are regulars at the so-called Green Wall area of Brighton Beach, where other fights have taken place. Green said that he was arrested in December after defending himself in a fight outside of Smiley's Saloon and spent 20 days in jail - a factor that he says motivated him not to fight back during the June 23 attack.

(Editors note: Some of the people mentioned in the interview below have not been charged or criminally implicated with any crimes, and those that have been charged have entered Not Guilty pleas. A preliminary Hearing has been set for August 13. B2M makes no aspersions as to anyones guilt or innocence).

B2M: What do you remember from night of incident?

R.G.: That night, I had two conversations with individuals. One didn't threaten me at all – the other one did. A gentleman named Mike McGuiness said, 'I could bet you an ounce of weed that I could get you kicked out of town tonight.' And he said this in front of me and this girl named Sanger. I'm not going to say that these kids were called against me by means of him. It just seems very…seems very, uh…probable – that somehow, whoever told these kids I was out looking for them – that it could have been him or a group of people associated with him.

B2M: Sanger – is that the name you said?

R.G.: Um, the girl…

B2M: [What about] Suraya?

R.G.: Suraya.

B2M: Suraya. Did you know her before this?

R.G.: Yeah – we had an argument once because her and a group of other kids started throwing rotten fruit at me one day. And I turned around after having one come throughs my leg. And I said, hey, look – I'm just walking down the street here and I said if I see any of you kids throwing fruit at me – this is wrong. I mean, I'm sorry, I haven't done anything to any of you guys. I guess one of the kids decided to call the cops. And the cops came – and this has to be on a police report because I told them everything that I had said, and everything that they had done. And he was like, yeah, man, you know – people have a right to you know, stand up, you know, for wrongs being done against them.

R:G:I told the kids when it happened that I if I see you throwing one of these things at me, I can't guarantee that won't be angry at the one I see throwing them at me.

B2M: How old where they?

R.G.: Kids – 18, maybe 19.

R.G.:And one of these kids said, well, if you do that, then we're just going to jump you. And that was the first time heard anybody say they were all going to have a piece of attacking me. So when that thing happened that night, it was like a fulfillment of a statement that Joe Binder?Joe Binder's little brother was one of the people that said that.

R.G.: The last time my mind was called in question regarding my sanity was the last time I mentioned 'border patrol.' My own lawyer was like don't mention that name again, and it sounds like your being paranoid about a group of people that didn't exist. And so now, this time around, I'm kind of happy that the cops found the initials of BBP on the skateboard. And when I talked with the cops recently, they were like "BBP was on there – what people in the border patrol do you know that you might have had a conflict with in the weeks before that. And the only person I mentioned was that I had issues with was Mike McGuiness, but I don't think he is part of the border patrol. But I do know that Derek is – he wears a shirt saying border patrol all of the time. And he always threatens that he is going to use border patrol and run me out of town if I have any more conflicts. Usually my conflicts with people – I stand up for my truth. And because I stand up for my truth with such authority – people tend to get offended. They are like, 'who are you?

B2M: So that night, you leave the party, you're walking down the Little Mesa. Can you tell me what you remember about that, and when you found you were left for dead, or whatever?

R.G.: When I heard the voices I said to myself, walk down to the bottom of the [Little]Mesa, whosever calling you, hopefully they are all about squaring things out…Like maybe they are calling me because someone said something. Well, if they asked you a question you can answer the questions, you know. And it might cause those individuals to go, never mind, dude – you're the wrong guy, or something. And I was really hoping on that. Then I did have in my mind, these kids sound very violent. And whoever shows up, they're not even going to be thinking about questioning me. And once again, when I was in front of these people, they didn't ask me one single question, yet, about what I was doing here, and what I was doing up on the [Little] Mesa, and why did I show up in front of them… no one asked me any questions at all. There were lights all in front of me. There were people around me…

B2M: Like headlights?

R.G.: Headlights. And there were people coming out of certain perspectives of the light where I couldn't see who they were – they were just shadows. B2M: So did they show up in their cars? Is that what they did?

R.G.: They showed up in their cars. And for me, I was like, there is no way I could defend myself.

B2M: How many cars?

R.G.: I would say there were maybe about six, seven cars. And I was saying, yeah, there was no way I could even defend myself. There's no light – I can't see anything. Well, stick by your first statement, don't defend [against] any skateboarder – because all I was seeing was skateboards in everyone's hands and everyone was just ready, you know…

B2M: So five to six skateboards.

R.G.: And also I want to say, just for the record, there were some kids who had looks in their eyes like 'I don't want to be here. I don't even know how I got into being here.' And when they were hitting me, they were like, 'I'm not hitting you with my whole force.' They didn't want to be in that situation.

B2M: Were those any of the people that were arrested?

R.G.: I don't know. Four names keep coming up in all the papers and there were more than four people there. So I keep wondering who these four main people are, unless they were just like the thinkers…

B2M: Did you see McGuiness?

R.G.: (Misunderstanding question) No, his name is not in there.

B2M: You didn't see him there, or anything like that?

R.G.: My mom did. My mom said she heard his name a number of times [in the ensuing court hearings].

B2M: But you didn't personally see him at the attack?

R.G.: No. Not once.

B2M: So you basically just walked down there, they blockaded you, and they started going at you?

R.G.: No. I saw her – Suraya – and I was like, 'What's going on, Suraya?' And she was like, 'I don't know man.' She'd say, "Whatsup?' And was like 'Whatsup?' There was this 'gangster' talk coming out of their mouths, you know. And I was just like, 'Okay, I guess this conversation is not going anywhere.' And I wanted to ask questions, but I didn't have any energy in me to pull out like, who called this meeting together… I thought all of these conversations would go nowhere. So I chose not to say any of those things. So I'm happy to be finding out stuff now.

B2M: So was she the first person to hit you?

R.G.: She's the first person I remember hitting me. And then after her, it was like two more hits and one of them knocked me out…you know…one of them knocked me out. And I think it was a hit from behind because I remember looking back at the fence (cranes head) and it was a hit from back here that just…I said…everything was like 'guh-guh-guh-guh…'

B2M: Do you still have a lump and stuff like that?

R.G.: No, not on the back of my head. I have a hole on the back of my head. (Lifts scarf and hat to reveal wound on side of head).

R.G. That was the one that hurt the most.

R.G.: They said [in court documents] that I was grabbing somebody's leg, trying to fight. And that's when they had to continue to do stuff. And one of the guys said, 'Hey, you're killing him. Let him go. Or don't hit him anymore with the skateboards.'

B2M: Do you think you were singled out because of the color of your skin?

R.G.: No, no, no. Not at all. I think it was because I spoke so forcefully about how I felt I was protected, legally against any kind of activity like this…

B2M: I may have asked this already, but are you considering leaving Bolinas?

R:G.: No. No way. This is my home.

They need to try these kids under the patriot act. Vigilantism is a form of terrorism and robs people of their basic human rights. The fact that the victim was homeless shouldn't matter in the least. We all have basic human rights, such as not having to face a death squad of over-privileged teenagers.

Don't you know the difference between "Spinning," "Spin," and "Spun?"
I knew your Mother. She was one of the first persons I met in Bolinas when I arrive nearly thirty years ago. I danced with her at my first Fireman's Ball in Stinson Beach. I met her at Smileys, where we shared a drink. Reckon she knows the difference

      Elliott,
What I did was to interview the victim of a heinous crime and to report his account here and in the West Marin Citizen. It sounds as if you may have first-hand knowledge of the attack. If so, I encourage you to contact the proper authorities. A.H.

What was the reply to my posting that you deleted? Where and when was the accompanying photograph of Ricky taken? Where in Bolinas is the Rice Bowl sign in the backdrop? Why were the only full names included in the interview those of persons uncharged, while those charged are not named? Has Ricky's lawyer responded to his being quoted by Ricky in the interview. Why does mentioning the Border Patrol brand someone as paranoid. What about the rumble in Bolinas that followed in the wake of maps being sold at Tam High that directed those who purchased them to the pot plantations of fellow Tam students from West Marin who sold them pot? Isn't that the real reason the BoBo sign was removed?

stop making ricky seem like some innocent spiritual street person
he is or was on some heavy drugs. he could be very intimidating when he spoke to you in his "authoritive" way, and half the time didn't even make sense due to either drugs or just being crazy.
no one should be beat like that, but i do think he had a part in provoking these kids.
alex, if you spent some time in your so called home town (not Rhonert Park), you maybe would have seen a different side of ricky. he is a @!$%# disturber and shouldn't be living in this town.
by the way, its the green wall, not green death.
i have also read some of your other articles and you should get your facts straight. you give journalism a bad name. maybe you should write for a tabloid.

Rainer Ale = Green Death. Longtime nickname and painting on wall.

I don't quite get your frustration at me... What you have read is an interview with the victim of a crime, and I make no presumption to guilt or innocence of any of the accused.

I hear you say that he did not deserve the beating. And you say that you think that he provoked the attack. Okay, if you have proof, how about coming forward and using your name? @!$%# disturber or not, is it right for a gang of people to take on one guy? I have never seen anything like this in Bolinas. And I mean not only what happened to Ricky Green, but attitudes like your own.

                  Dear Editor,

So now we have to deal with it. Something is wrong here. Looks like we have raised some monster young. I'm all for a person being innocent until proven guilty, I like that idea.

But if it turns out that the monsters who beat and stabbed Ricky green are guilty, we have a problem.

It's been really hard over the years to express concerns about our culture; there is some kind of prevalent notion that we are somehow better than other people. That our @!$%# does not stink, and that we should be hostile to outsiders, who obviously do not stand up to our high standards. So xenophobia has been hailed as a local high standard and attitude. Unlike Stinson beach, who not only welcomes strangers, but also encourages them to visit. I have personally never understood the prejudice against tourists. Being a tourist is one of my favorite ways to be. I love being a tourist, seeing new places, meeting new people. I feel deep feelings of gratitude when I visit a place and am received warmly. What is so cool about being hostile to strangers? Why is it written that events in the community center cannot be advertised beyond west marin, that businesses in the community cannot advertise beyond west marin. And we act shocked when these sickos we produced act out? They have been brought up in a culture that embraces bigotry toward outsiders, visitors, guests, newcomers. No wonder they think it is alright to beat, torture, and maim them. It is the logical outcome of teaching youth to abhorr strangers, interlopers, people from over the hill, people who have not lived here for a generation or two. Folks, we created these monsters. We taught them to hate and despise people from the outside world. It's all fun getting rid of the highway sign . But what message does that give to our youth?

The terrible irony, is that this story is not going to go away. I have already seen newspapers with Bolinas marked on a map as the sight of this crime. Bolinas has never, in my recollection ever received so much publicity. Ever! We should assume we are going to be overrun with cops, undercover cops, fbi, homeland security, press foreign and domestic, morbid curiosity seekers, demented perverts, ku Klux Clan recruiters, aryan nation ex cons with swastika tattoos, skateboard wielding knife stabbing teens who feel a kinship with our local celebrities. they're on their way and they don't have flowers in their hair.
So , if nothing else, these villains are guilty of extreme violations of the basic tenets of the Bolinas Border Patrol. They brought a lot of attention to Bolinas, the put Bolinas in the news, on the map. If they are guilty, and ever make their way back here, they should be charged with that crime. And tried by their border Patrol comrades, and punishment should and must be inflicted. Maybe they should get what they gave. They should get the Ricky Green torture. Those dumb asses Crowded the waves. Brought the Associated Press into our midst. They are just so unbolinas.

Where are all the chicken@!$%#s who witnessed this atrocity, drove cars and shone headlights, and failed to call 911? Couldn't they remember the number? Why are they failing to come forth and bear witness? Why are our children so stupid? Why do so many of them drop out of High School because they can't keep up? Is it something in the water, or in the merciless mesa wind? Or are they just too stoned? When you hear grade school kids joking about smoking pot or eating mushrooms, is it really cute? And our answer to this is a skateboard park? Is there something I don't get about encouraging a child to use his precious childhood getting good at skateboarding that I just don't get? Are there any other worthwhile pursuits? Anything else we could make a bond issue for?

The media persists in promoting the outmoded idea of bolinas that was true a decade or two ago. A land of free thinking, peace loving, bird saving, eco minded, progressive, politically minded, artists andactivists. Ponderosa pine is a long time gone. Those people are mostly gone, the great poets, writers, artists…they are for the most part long gone…it got too expensive. Real estate vultures made a fortune turning homes into real estate ventures. The present makeup of the town is not those freaks who settled here in the seventies. There is hardly a house for sale much under a million dollars. We now are home to retired military and their demented progeny, insurance brokers, real estate investors, fashion divas, and closet republicans. People who have a million or so to buy a place, or thousands a month to rent one. We sold this town out when we allowed and encouraged real estate speculation. A lot of people made a lot of money on real estate around here, huge amounts of money. With no turnover tax, like in most places, including the town north of here, turnover tax on real estate sales that put revenue into the town to provide necessary services, well- funded schools, and cultural enrichment. How many have bought a place, fixed it up, sold it, and made a bundle? And then they are gone. That is not community. That is a lot of rich people passing through and making a quick buck, and making real estate vultures rich with every turnover.

A friend put it perfectly. "The town is not a babysitter." You can't accept 'goin downtown' as a reasonable substitute for parental guidance. Thank god ricky's spirit is so strong and he is still alive. Imagine what those suspects would be facing if he had died. We should all shout out in resounding thanks to ricky for staying alive.

If the allegations are true, then those scumbags deserve everything they get. It is unfortunate that our penal system is not geared toward rehabilitation, but it is not. So these culprits can look forward to getting ripped a new one, and learning how to make license plates.

they encounter someone who is knowledgeable about metaphysics, and an accomplished musician and stylist, but he doesn't skate, and that makes him contemptible and worthy of abuse. Skateboard parks, why don't we teach the children to read and to think? Why are there so few hours of library time? Why don't parents notice that their children have dropped out of school? Maybe with the new bond measure we should create a video game park. Anything to keep them from studying so they can keep up in school, or make some worthwhile contribution to the world, just skate and game, that's what youth is for. Folks, that is what we are telling these kids. And we wonder why they are so dumb, dumb enough to get caught up in mob madness, like dumbass soccer clubbers. When you encourage a child to hit a soccerball with his head, you are sending a message. That makes people stupid. Just look at soccer club players at a match. Bouncing a soccer ball off your head makes you dumb. A soccer ball coming from twenty feet in the air has the impact of a punch from a professional lightweight boxer. Duh! Most of the world now requires headgear for children playing soccer. But not here, that would be pussy. Unmanly. Light in the cleats.

"They shouted out 'Who killed the kennedys' I shouted back 'It was you and me!"

Having embraced xenophobia as a belief or religion, can we be surprised at the hostility that earmarks many of our children? If they are taught, and conditioned into an attitude of hostility toward strangers, who can be surprised at what happened? What happened is surprising, only in that it hasn't happened sooner.

So now it looks like some of our young people, some very young people, are going to spend the next couple of decades in prison for embracing these xenophobic beliefs. maybe we better do something about it. Do we really want to raise children that are going to spend decades being raped and beaten in prison, once the nature of their crime is known.

Maybe we should stop teaching our children to be suspicious of and disdainful of people who have not lived here all their lives. Maybe we should encourage friendliness instead of hostility. That might be a good lesson to our young. Maybe then they wouldn't form packs that beat and stab people who are different. This behavior is common to feral dogs and swine. Maybe there are good people that were not born or raised in Bolinas. Why is the question " how long have you been here?" so prevalent and so important? What kind of message does that deliver to children? Should we really be surprised when they act out their hostility?

Maybe we should take a look at our school. How long can you tolerate bullyism before reaping these kinds of results? Our school has for too long been tolerant of bullies. Bullyism is symptomatic of psychopathy, sociopathy, and other forms of social aberrance. It denotes bad parenting. These children should be weeded out. While it may be profitable, because the number of children in the school directly affects the amount of state money, but can we afford to keep children in the school who are obviously in need of special education? The antisocial and maladjusted should be sent to schools that can address their special needs, instead of keeping them in the general school population, allowing them to disrupt the educational process. Even if it means a few less dollars from the state. We can see who these potential monsters are at an early age, they are the ones who are constantly threatening those frailer than themselves, or different from themselves. And those that haven't been in Bolinas for a generation or two, they are prey.

We all have known who these children are, parents are aware of them, students are aware of them, their teachers have to suffer their presence. The students who are there to learn have to suffer their behavior, have to bear the boredom that comes from having to move so slowly so that the mentally insufficient can't keep up. We are not doing these kids a favor by pretending that nothing is wrong with them. It looks like they are going to prison. Special education might have been better for them. Even if they are good at athletics, which is venerated as the only worthwhile activity, worthy of a plaque with their names and accomplishments engraved forever. No plaque for the scholars, poets, artists, musicians, dancers: but there it is, in shiny brass, for the kid who can jump higher, run faster, or throw a big piece of lead farther. How about a plaque for the kids who think better, write better, paint better, play music better, or are known for acts of kindness and compassion. We encourage young people to bounce soccer balls off their heads without protective headgear, and then wonder why they are stupid and vicious.

Then they are graduated and sent off to High School, where they meet people who are bigger and stronger, and they can't take it and drop out. Or they are too stupid to keep up and drop out. And that only makes them angrier. But hanging out in Bolinas they are fine, and lauded for their skills of skateboarding, or intimidating strangers. We need skateboard parks, not extended library hours. To succeed in High School, there is little time for skating or hanging out smoking weed, snorting meth, and intimidating strangers.

And where are their parents during all this? What exactly does "Boys will be boys." mean ? Is that really a justification for aberrant behavior? Why were they hanging out in front of a bar? How bad is it for them at home, that they would rather be hanging out in front of a bar hoping for a fight. Or planning to gaet togethr and blind their prey with headlights, like a hunted deer. There must be somethng better to do. When they hang out all day skating and getting loaded, don't you notice? Or is it just a "boys will be boys" thing. Just a phase. How about them Giants. Aren't they supposed to b in school? Or busy learning something. Or is it better for them to hangout at the crossroads with loaded skateboards.

It has often been said that the "coach" is the strongest influence on a developing child, the adult who is there with them on the playing field of life. It has been said that on the playing field is where children learn about life. Are our playing fields places where children learn fairness, compassion, mutual respect, and have fun playing with a ball, keyword, playing. The kid who plays dirty at soccer or basketball is not just being a boy, he is exhibiting sociopathic tendencies. Leaving some kids to sit on the bench , while others who may be a bit more physically developed monopolize the game, defeats the whole purpose of getting kids together to play a game. Are childhood trophies really that important? Is it really that important who wins the childhood soccer game? Do militaristic coaches, treating players like marine recruits really enhance their childhood experience? Does it make them better people? Is winning really all that important. It's a game! Why should some kids get to play more than others? What message does that send?

So it seems we have raised children who think it is cool to form packs and harass, beat and stab someone just because he is different from them. They think they have the right, maybe even the obligation to do this. Like Don Deane, I too keep asking why this happened. Why would a pack of young people gang up on, beat with a rock and skateboards, and stab a gentle creative artist?

Face it, we created these monsters. We should have known better. There were plenty of signs. We just looked away. As the names come out, some will act shocked. Our schools should have seen it. Our police agencies should have seen it. We are not doing kids a favor by excusing their antisocial behavior. Those kids need help at an early age. We have tolerated, embraced, and rewarded their aberrance. That is not smart. And teaching them that it is somehow all right because they are from Bolinas is not a good idea. A gentleman is a gentleman and a lady is a lady no matter where you come from. Some things are right and some things are wrong. Mean, aggressive behavior is not justified or acceptable anywhere.

I join all those who hope that there is some mistake. That the perpetrators of this horrible crime are not guilty. At the moment it looks like that is not the case. I hope it turns out that way, but it doesn't look like it. But maybe it will turn out that way, and it will turn out to be true that people from Bolinas really are better than other people. That we don't have children that need special attention and separate schooling. That it really is good for our children to be hanging out doing nothing, and if they do a lot of drugs and get stupid and act stupid, that is just a part of growing up. That the world beyond Bolinas is a hostile and threatening environment, and that anybody that comes from there is suspect, and maybe deserves whatever they get for infringing on us by being here. That people that are different from those born and raised and have ancestry here have a right to do anything they want to outsiders. That there is little diversity because darker skinned people are not part of our illustrious past.

"They asked who killed the Kennedy's, I answered back it was you and me." I am ashamed. I am ashamed to be a part of a community where this could happen. But maybe it will turn out to be true that the culprits were from Novato, like so many said at first.

So what do we do about Ricky? It happened here, and we owe him. The least we can do is to provide him with a comfortable home if he survives. Is there anybody out there with a home for Ricky? He will surely be eligible for section 8 housing. Is there someone who has a rental for a really fine human being who suffered unforgivable treatment in our midst? Can we get together and raise some money and some love. Even a loan. Surely he will be able to pay it back when the civil suits against the culprits and and their families are settled. There is some justice in that, both poetic and pecuniary. If they are guilty, they and their families will be taking care of Ricky for a long time. He could own in their expensive homes. And that is how it should be. Parents are responsible for the actions of their minor children. Adults are responsible for theirs. If they are guilty, this is going to cost them bigtime, and it still isn't enough to compensate Ricky for what happened.

We owe Ricky bigtime. If it turns out that the culprits are from Bolinas or not. Whoever they were, lets hope they get what they deserve. It happened here. I hope they are not guilty. You hope they are not. But right now it does not look that way. We don't have to worry about the culprits if they are guilty; they are going to be taken care of for a long time. And I mean taken care of. Let's take care of Ricky, even if it is a pitiful expression of too little too late. He is going to need a lot to recover from what happened to him here. He chose to bless us with his presence, his art, his smile, his love. I miss him.

                  Sincerely,

                  Anna Nimmiss

Hey Anna, that was very well written and I agreed with a lot of what you said. I'm a skateboarder and college student from Lucas Valley, and although I'm not from your 'village' I want you to know that skateboarding is not evil. In fact to me it is an art form and I believe it is a noble pursuit for any young kid to get good at something physical and challenging, because we are only young once.

Skating and Smoking did not make these kids who they are and don't you ever associate anything of the sort with the beating of strangers.

I sort of think Bolinas is funny actually. I'm not mocking you guys, I'm not judging you guys, but you know what, I think I'll skate your skatepark sometime, just because I want to. You guy can skate mine, its at McInnis Park and the kids are nice there.

                          Wow,
About a week ago I stumbled thru Bolinas. I was not looking for it. I am from a rural area on the Eastern side of the Chesapeake Bay on the Virginia Eastern Shore. I was driving around and came across your village. I found the coop and got myself a cup of coffee and a sandwich. I asked a woman if I could share her table (it was the only one with an umbrella) I felt the vibe. She was not thrilled by the idea, but said ok. She told me about the town. A little of the history, the many artists and musicians that live there or have in the past. I jokingly said I would not tell anyone I was there, or take any pictures. I did not. On the way back to my car I came across the notice in front of the store concerning a meeting about the assault. I was curious and wrote down the website. I searched the rest and was shocked by the events. I am sorry for the troubles in your town. You are not alone. I think many communities share the same values. We raise our children to think like us. Our kids are good kids but make poor choices. Last year there was an accident that took out four of our youth all at once. We were devastated. The reason I was on the west coast to begin with was to get my own son out of the area for a short time and expose him to something he could not get here. He took an Outward Bound course for 10 days. I think he actually "got it". I hope it sticks. Life after all is about choices we make. I hope for all of us we can "teach our children well"
                          Peace friends, and better days!
